Carnegie Learning's Math Relief Offerings

Carnegie Learning Math Relief PackagesThe economic stimulus package, known as the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, was signed into law on February 17, 2009. It will provide administrators with needed funding to carry out plans in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.

The economic stimulus plan contains increases in funding for Title I, IDEA, technology, teacher incentives, and STEM initiatives to improve math and science instruction. In response to the passage of this legislation, Carnegie Learning has developed a “math relief program.” It is designed for schools and districts with a critical need to improve student achievement in secondary mathematics.

For a limited time, Carnegie Learning will be offering a 3-year site license to our research-based and award winning Cognitive Tutor® Software at a significant discount. Customers who pay for a 2-year subscription, will receive the third year for free. This offer will expire on July 31, 2009.

Carnegie Learning’s 2009 Math Webinar Series Continues with RTI

The response to our 2009 webinar series continues to be very exciting! If you were not one of the hundreds of people that have attended our events, you can still watch the recorded sessions via our events website. We are still accepting registrations for the remainder of the series, including the next event titled “Response to Intervention for Secondary Mathematics”. Our FREE Math Webinar Series consists of monthly online seminars featuring top educational leaders, with topics covering Algebra Readiness, End of Course Tests, Developmental Math, and Response to Intervention (RTI).

We hope that you will join us for all of these free online events in 2009! For more information or to register, visit www.carnegielearning.com/events.

Carnegie Learning Developmental Math Program Increases Retention Rate for Pellissippi State Technical Community College

Pellissippi State Success StoryPellissippi State Technical Community College has taken a unique approach to redesigning its developmental math program. Their goal is to provide a more customized instructional path for their students and to focus on a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. They believe this approach will lead to better immediate learning as well as retention of mathematics that will result in college success for their students.

The PSTCC approach integrates individualized computer assisted instruction with classroom instruction. Sections meet one hour per week in the classroom and one hour in the math computer lab. Students are required to spend two additional hours per week working in the lab where instructor/tutor support is available. The curriculum is divided into nine modules, covering the mathematics topics that were previously covered in three levels of developmental math courses. The new structure treats all developmental math students as being in a single course, but students have different software assignments, depending on their performance on a placement test taken prior to beginning the course. Students progress through this modularized curriculum using the Cognitive Tutor® software.

The classroom instruction of the redesign focuses on conceptual understanding of broad mathematical topics and skills needed for college success. These lessons, which are appropriate for all students regardless of module placement, include: number sense, functions, interpreting graphs, multiple representations of mathematical concepts, proportional reasoning, and graphing calculator instruction. To help build the foundation for success in developmental mathematics and college coursework, other lessons include study skills, time management, advising, financial aid and career information.

The new course format allows opportunities for instructors to speak individually with students, give encouragement and feedback, and monitor student progress in the curriculum. Students are spending more time actively engaged in mathematics.

Pellissippi State instructors piloted three different software packages before implementing the redesign of their developmental math course. They chose the Carnegie Learning® Cognitive Tutor program for its focus on both procedural and conceptual thinking, meaningful applications and modeling, connections between representations, continuous formative assessment, and mastery learning.

At the end of the pilot year in 2007-2008, positive results were already starting to come in. Twelve out of twelve students using Carnegie Learning curricula passed college level math course. Their retention rate rose from 70.57% in the 2007-2008 school year to 76.58% in the 2008-2009 school year. This was the first time in three years that their students in the Developmental Studies Math had a higher retention rate than the Non-Developmental students.

These small improvements are a huge beginning for PSTCC and they expect even greater results in the future.

"Recently Carnegie Learning’s software has served as the core curricula used to help our students complete and pass our developmental math course more quickly so that they can move on to college-level mathematics."

Cognitive Tutor Updates for 2009
Part 3: Assessment Reports

Carnegie Learning is dedicated to providing you with the best possible solutions for your students. That is why we are constantly improving our Cognitive Tutor software, with new updates usually occurring twice a year.

For the Spring 2009 release, there will be many new features and enhancements. Each month, we’ll discuss one of the new features in our customer newsletter. This month’s feature is the NEW Assessment Reports that will be available in the Spring 2009 release.

Assessment Reports
Data is an important tool for personalizing instruction and ensuring that students are progressing at an appropriate pace to master concepts and skills. Teachers can now access four new reports that illustrate performance on pre- and post-tests in the Cognitive Tutor Software, including:

  1. Student Report By Problem – View how a student performed on each problem in the assessment. Plus see the scored response, correct answer, and the student’s answer.
  2. Class Report By Problem – Shows a class summary for each core problem in the assessment.
  3. Student Report by Topic – See a summary of a student’s strengths and weaknesses by mathematical topic.
  4. Class Report by Topic – See a class summary of students’ strengths and weaknesses by mathematical topic.

For more information about these exciting new features, please contact us using our online form or via phone at 888-851-7094.

Next month’s feature: Custom Curricula Advisor
