Carnegie Learning Math Curriculum Receives Highest Ranking from Kentucky Committee for Mathematics Achievement

Carnegie Learning’s Bridge to Algebra and Algebra I Outscore Eight Competitive Middle School Math Programs

PITTSBURGH, PA, May 8, 2007 – Carnegie Learning, Inc., a leading publisher of research-based math curricula for middle school, high school, and postsecondary students, reported today that the company’s middle school curricula are among nine math programs recently evaluated by the Kentucky Committee for Mathematics Achievement, and the only one to receive the top ranking in every category in the Committee’s assessment of intermediate and middle grades math intervention programs.

Reviews for Carnegie Learning and the other eight publishers including ALEKS, America’s Choice, Apangea, AutoSkills, Glencoe, I Can Learn, SRA, and Voyager, are available to the public on the Kentucky Center for Mathematics website at www.kymath.org/intervention/iMiddleSchool.asp.

The Kentucky Committee for Mathematics Achievement, made up of mathematics teachers, university faculty, and representatives from education organizations across the Commonwealth, reviewed nine math curricula against expectations set forth in a rubric that included the following categories: Theoretical/Research Basis; Effects on Students Achievement; Mathematics Content; Depth of Knowledge; Instructional Strategies; Assessment Strategies; Remediation Strategies; Reporting System; and Professional Development.

“The Kentucky review is very significant because it does more than simply evaluate which curricula have produced improved student performance; it asks the more important question about why some curricula show stronger results than others,” said Dr. Steve Ritter, Chief Product Architect at Carnegie Learning, Inc. “It is no longer enough to say you are researched-based. Curricula must demonstrate a consistent pedagogy with recent supporting data that demonstrate the ability to replicate success in diverse environments.”

“The intermediate and middle grades are critical times in a child’s understanding of mathematics concepts, and education leaders in Kentucky are committed to improving math performance in these grades and preparing our students for success in high school,” said Dr. Bill Bush, Chairman of the Kentucky Committee for Mathematics Achievement. “This initial review of nine curricula is a first step in helping teachers make appropriate decisions for students in selecting curricula and professional development programs. This is an ongoing process, and we are committed to providing quality learning experiences for our students.”
