PREALGEBRA & ALGEBRA I FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

Introducing Carnegie Learning's Integrated Curriculum Solution: Prealgebra and Algebra I. The first and only on-line prealgebra and algebra curriculum built on Cognitive Tutor® technology, one of the only true research based math curricula in the country. The program is strongly conceptually based and is designed to develop algebraic thinking and understanding. It incorporates a variety of instructional strategies such as suggestions for key actions, hints and information about alternative solution paths. Multiple representations of mathematical concepts are used.

Features:

  • The research-based pedagogy of the Cognitive Tutor software engages students directly in problem solving using concrete, real world scenarios.

  • For each content strand, students make connections between multiple representations using models, patterns, and symbols.

  • Interactive Examples provide instructions on screen, both demonstrating how to operate the program and what concepts are addressed in the problem. Interactive examples also provide links to instructional materials, interactive applications (including graphs when appropriate) within lessons being studied.

  • Step-by-step interactive examples: online, problem-specific examples with step-by-step walkthroughs. Program adapts as students respond to various questions and leads students to understand their own remediation needs.

  • Several forms of help are available when solving problems – automatically generated Just-in-Time Help and On-Demand Help when the user selects the Hint button

  • Assessment:
    • Diagnostic: pre-test places the student in an individualized study plan tailored to their skill level
    • Post Test: confirms mastery and determines a score. If it is determined that a student has not mastered all the necessary topics he/she will be presented with a new personalized learning plan based on the assessment
    • Formative and summative assessment is provided through the technology to both the student and the instructor via pre-test, post-test and continuous skill tracking throughout the curriculum.
    • The Skillometer visually summarizes the student's mastery of math skills. After students complete each problem, Carnegie Learning's Cognitive Tutor evaluates skill levels and gives students new problems that target deficient skills.

  • Custom Sequencing: Instructors can construct their own curriculum by selecting; organizing and removing units from the software's default standard curricula. Assessments tie to re-sequenced curricula automatically.

  • Students can search and view a Glossary of mathematical terms that lists definitions and worked examples for terms used in the software.

  • Reporting and Tracking: Instructor's Toolkit tracks and reports individual and class progress. It offers student visual tracking of dynamic feedback of student progress. Program assists instructors in tracking student learning to help the instructor provide focused interaction for each student.

The Student Detailed report displays detailed information at a section level on a student's progress through the Cognitive Tutor software. It includes such data as number of problems solved, average time per problem, and average help requests per problem Reports can be printed.
