Happy New Year!
Carnegie Learning would like to wish all of our customers a Happy New Year! We hope that you are starting your semesters on a positive note, and that your students are on track for tremendous success in 2010!
This month's newsletter covers several exciting topics, including the launch of Carnegie Learning Geometry , Second Edition curriculum and the announcement about our first-ever National Math Institute!
Carnegie Learning Geometry:
New Developments for 2010-2011 School Year
This is the first article in a five-part series about the revised Carnegie Learning Geometry curriculum! Each month leading up to the official launch in May 2010, we'll update you on some of the new features and enhancements that are being developed for both the textbooks and Cognitive Tutor software. The curriculum will be available for implementation in the next school year (2010-2011), but we will have samples and demonstrations available in the upcoming months.
Carnegie Learning Geometry, Second Edition Textbook
Our Curriculum Development team analyzed the National Council of Teachers of Math and Achieve standards and incorporated their key mathematical concepts into this new edition. They also considered educational research, best practices, and customer feedback when developing new content and pedagogical approaches.
The Carnegie Learning Geometry,
Second Edition will include:
- New lessons
- Additional step-by-step examples
- Hand-drawn illustrations
- Chapter summaries
- Skills practice
To help you with your review process, we've prepared an online sampler of Carnegie Learning Geometry that highlights the new enhancements. To view this sampler and download it as a PDF, please visit our samples Web page.
We've also scheduled a webinar to introduce the exciting updates for the new Geometry curriculum. You can register for this FREE event by visiting the Webinar Event page on our website.
Dr. Mary Monroe-Ellis Receives the Carnegie Learning 2010 Partner Award
Carnegie Learning is pleased to announce the recipient of the Carnegie Learning 2010 Partner Award: Dr. Mary Monroe-Ellis. The partner award is given annually to an educator who has demonstrated leadership and achieved outstanding results in improving student achievement in math.
Dr. Monroe-Ellis is the Dean of Transitional Studies at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Tennessee. A former middle and high school math teacher, she has taught the subjects of algebra and geometry. Mary has spent the last twenty years at PSTCC as a math professor and has served as the Dean of Transitional Studies Department for the past two years.
When redesigning their developmental math course, Pellissippi State instructors piloted three different software solutions. They chose Cognitive Tutor Developmental Math Software for its focus on both procedural and conceptual thinking, meaningful applications and modeling, connections between representations, continuous formative assessment, and mastery learning.
At the end of the pilot year in 2007-2008, positive results were already starting to come in. All students who used Carnegie Learning curricula passed their college level math course. PSTCC's retention rate rose from 70.57% in the 2007-2008 school year to 76.58% in the 2008-2009 school year. This was the first time in three years that their students in the Developmental Studies Math had a higher retention rate than the Non-Developmental students.
Everyone at Carnegie Learning would like to thank Dr. Monroe-Ellis for her partnership and wish her students continued success in the years to come.
