MATHia software Coach Calc Contest winner
Congratulations to our MATHia software Coach Calc Contest winner Micah Hoyt of East Hall High School in Gainesville, GA.
In the new Middle School MATHia software there will be a new instructional calculator feature called “Coach Calc.” This instructional calculator is designed to help students understand appropriate calculator use. Most of the time, Coach Calc operates as a regular calculator. However, if a student tries a calculation that they should know in their head, Coach Calc acts as a coach and encourages them to think through it without the use of the calculator. We want Coach Calc to speak to students in a fun way. See example below.

The Coach Calc contest invited participants to provide a response that will be presented if a student tries to divide by 0. Micah Hoyt submitted the contest winner entry:
"Dividing by zero is like licking your elbow. It sounds easy but you just can’t do it! *pause* “you just tried it didn’t you?”
Micah's entry will be featured in the new Middle School MATHia software that will be introduced this fall.
We would like thank all those who submitted entries for the Coach Cal Contest. Our goals is to continue to enlist your feedback by providing programs to enlist the ideas of our customers and experts in the math field to continue to make our curricula more engaging and beneficial for student learning.

What's New in Cognitive Tutor Software for 2011-2012
This edition of the Software Implementation Guide is updated for the 2011 Cognitive Tutor® software. This year's enhancements include:
- Assessments by Unit: Assessments in custom curriculum can now be created by unit instead of topic.
- A Student Search button in Teacher's Toolkit that allows you to search for students to find out what class they are in.
- The selection mechanism is now used for various other solver menu items that don't involve scratchpads. This allows the student to select the portion of the expression that they want to apply the menu item to, allowing students to type the result of that operation without having to retype the entire expression.
- Edit class sequence now allows you to reset student assignment to the first incomplete module in the sequence.
