Carnegie Learning Named West Virginia School Improvement Partner

Math Curricula and Professional Development Provider Selected to Support Sustainable Change in Low-performing Schools

PITTSBURGH, PA, June 15, 2010 – The State of West Virginia has announced the selection of Carnegie Learning, Inc. as a comprehensive school improvement partner to help the state turn around underperforming schools.

West Virginia was the first state to receive funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s $3.5 billion School Improvement Grants program targeted at overhauling persistently low-achieving schools. Twenty-seven schools in West Virginia are eligible to apply for a share of the state’s $22 million in School Improvement funds.  These schools will develop and implement improvement strategies with support from for-profit and non-profit entities that demonstrate the expertise and research-based track record for creating systematic, scalable school improvement. Districts receiving School Improvement funds agree to make significant changes to the school structure and school day including staffing and leadership changes, overhaul of curriculum, and extended learning times.

Carnegie Learning® Curricula supports West Virginia's Content Standards and Objectives and 21st century mathematics through cooperative, task-based problem solving; adaptive, differentiated software; and a commitment to teacher effectiveness.

“We have a history of creating strong models for math success in West Virginia, and this new funding source gives individual schools the opportunity to adopt and expand upon these models,” said Dennis Ciccone, chief executive officer of Carnegie Learning, Inc.

Carnegie Learning® Math Curricula are adopted by the State of West Virginia and are currently implemented in 16 counties.

Carnegie Learning, Inc. is an approved School Improvement Grant partner in the State of Hawaii and is working as a School Improvement partner in districts in Washington State and Indiana.
