Innovative Tier II Intervention to Boost Math Achievement

PITTSBURGH, PA, August 26, 2010 – Yakima School District in eastern Washington State will implement Carnegie Learning® Math programs to help meet School Improvement objectives in three high schools and four middle schools in need of improvement.  Beginning this fall and continuing for three years, Carnegie Learning® Blended Math software and textbooks will serve as the Tier II intervention math strategy supported by significant professional development activity for teachers.

The $820,000 purchase of Carnegie Learning® Bridge to Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II integrates multiple elements of the School Improvement model including research proven curricula, job-embedded professional development and classroom coaching, as well as data analysis and ongoing leadership support.

“We are very confident about our decision to work with Carnegie Learning to meet our math improvement objectives,” said Mary Masten, director of secondary education for Yakima School District. “Our goal is to create a partnership that places evidence-based math instruction and job-embedded support for our teachers at the center of Yakima’s transformational efforts.”

Serving a diverse population of over 15,000 students, Yakima is the largest Latino-majority district in the state. The purchase was made with School Improvement funds from Washington’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Carnegie Learning is an approved School Improvement Grant partner in West Virginia, Michigan, and Hawaii, and the publisher’s curricula and professional development services are implemented in school improvement models in districts nationwide.

"Carnegie Learning is at the forefront of offering measurable School Improvement Grant support with a guarantee on performance not matched by any other company,” said Dennis Ciccone, chief executive officer of Carnegie Learning, Inc. “Our research-based differentiated math instruction, robust professional development, and commitment to ongoing research provides significant opportunity to districts committed to the turnaround and transformation of under-performing schools.”
