Carnegie Learning Announces Winners of 2011 Student & Leader Awards Program

Learning By Doing Awards Recognize Three Individuals for Bridging the Math Divide

PITTSBURGH, PA – June 14, 2011 – Carnegie Learning, Inc., a leading research-based mathematics curricula and professional services provider for middle and high schools today announced the 2011 winners of the Learning By Doing awards program recognizing outstanding accomplishments in Carnegie Learning classrooms and software labs in school districts around the country.

“Research and performance data indicate that all students can achieve a greater level of success in math in a differentiated, individualized learning environment that teaches real-world problem-solving skills,” said Erin Simmons, vice president of marketing and educational services for Carnegie Learning, Inc. “The Learning By Doing awards program celebrates students and school leaders who demonstrate this achievement in the classroom.”

Winners were selected from a pool of students and teachers nominated by district personnel for their persistence in improving the way math is taught and learned. Learning By Doing award winners overcame obstacles and persevered to achieve and change their own – and others – thinking about the accessibility of math, and each winner has a unique story of dedication and success.

Awardees are classroom teacher Barbara Cleveland, Wilson Middle School, Yakima School District 7, WA, recipient of the 2011 Leader Award; Virgil McArthur, Barry Goldwater High School, Deer Valley School District, AZ, recognized as the 2011 high school student winner; and Carol Lin, Goudy Technology Magnet Center, Chicago Public Schools, receiving the 2011 middle school student award.

Eligible students were nominated by teachers; enrolled in a math course where Carnegie Learning was implemented; demonstrated a commitment and dedication to learning mathematics; and, articulated how the Carnegie Learning curriculum impacted his or her life. Winners receive a lap top, as well as an honorary plaque and class celebration.

Eligible teachers and leaders were nominated by an instructional leader in the school or district; currently teach or supervise with Carnegie Learning curricula; provide evidence of exemplary instructional data; and, maintain a student-centered interactive Carnegie Learning classroom and/or computer lab.  The winner receives an honorary scholarship to attend the 2011 Carnegie Learning National Math Institute, July 10-13, 2011 in Grapevine, TX.
