2007-2008 Release
The following hardware requirements are for the 2007-2008 Release.
Network Configuration Recommendations
Remote Hosted implementations, including Carnegie Learning ONLINE, require reliable broadband Internet access from the school to the Carnegie Learning Server.
Wireless Connection:
When using a wireless network, 802.11g (54 Mbps) wireless technology is required for the best performance with no more than 25-30 computers connecting to a single wireless access point at one time. The wireless network router must be connected to a network that meets the requirements above.
Internet Connection:
Internal network:100Mb Ethernet
Bandwidth:
Sustained bandwidth of at least 1 kilobit per second per student session in the aggregate, with a minimum of 100 kbps burst recommended, 300 kbps burst preferred.
Installation Options
Carnegie Learning ONLINE 2007 and 2008 Cognitive Tutor® with Java WebStart: WebStart provides a flexible option for implementing the Cognitive Tutor software and keeping the software updated via the internet. Installation can be run on any machine meeting the standard system requirements for the client computers plus a few additional requirements specified below. No install CD Is required and multiple machines can download and install simultaneously. Installation on a local server is not required, only on individual teacher and student computers. All data is stored on Carnegie Learning's server and accessed remotely by the client computers via a reliable Internet connection. Carnegie Learning handles all server maintenance including server upgrades and data back ups. Using Java WebStart assures that all machines running the Cognitive Tutor will have access to the most recent updates available and provides a potentially simpler initial deployment and update process. A school ID supplied by Carnegie Learning Customer Support is required.
A minimum of a T1 connection with a local web cache or a T3 connection with or without a local web cache is required. The initial product download size is 3.2 Mb.
Supported web browsers for Carnegie Learning products include; Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, FireFox 2.0 or higher, and Safari 2.0 or higher.
Remote LMS (LAN): This option gives the users the most flexible implementation. No installation on a local server is required, only on individual teacher and student computers. Remote Access CDs are available to allow teachers and students to work from anywhere. All data is stored on Carnegie Learning's server and accessed remotely by the client computers with installed software or running remote access CDs via an Internet connection. Carnegie Learning handles all server maintenance. The school will need an identification number from Carnegie Learning Customer Support.
Client Server: This option requires installation of the Cognitive Tutor software on both an internal network server and on individual teacher and student computers (Clients). This implementation requires that the server meet minimum requirements (please refer to the hardware requirements). All data is hosted on the school’s internal server. We strongly suggest that security measures and appropriate file access is set up to avoid inadvertent or malicious data corruption.
Stand Alone: This option is for home school users who do not have Internet access. It is typically used for one or two students and all data is stored on the computer that the software is installed on. It does not require any network access or a server installation.
Notes
Remote Access CDs require an Internet connection and school ID.
Some laptop computers require adjusted power management settings in order to run Cognitive Tutor properly when running on battery power.
The Cognitive Tutor is not compatible with Microsoft Windows Terminal Services.
We cannot guarantee performance for systems not listed under our Minimum Supported specifications.
Some installation types may require a serial number or school id to install.
Hardware and software technologies change frequently. Carnegie Learning reserves the right to make changes to these hardware requirements at anytime.
