Collaborative Learning Focus

Throughout the text, icons emphasize the collaborative learning instruction model by which students construct their own meaning of math concepts. Students are directed to Discuss to Understand, Think for Yourself, Work with Your Partner, Work with Your Group, or Share with the Class.

Mathematics Communication

Students are encouraged to communicate with directions in the text such as, "Explain how you solved the problem to your partner," and "Share what your group discovered with the entire class."

Chapter Opener

A one-page Chapter Opener features a photo related to a real-world problem in the chapter and a list of the sections in the chapter with page references.

Lesson Layout

  • Fun lesson titles engage and motivate students and subtitles help teachers to key in on the math of the lesson.
  • Each lesson begins with a list of Objectives and Key Terms.
  • Students complete Problems based on real-life situations to which they can relate.
  • Occasional margin notes, called Take Note, remind students of information they have already learned or call attention to common ideas or common errors.

Looking Ahead

The opening page of each chapter, Looking Ahead, gives a brief description of what students can expect in the chapter, a group of review problems to help students determine prerequisite skills for the chapter, and a list of the chapter’s key terms with page references.

Looking Back

At the end of the chapter, Looking Back pages provide a list of Key Terms and a summary of all major mathematical concepts from the chapter. One or more worked examples are shown for each concept.

Glossary

A Glossary of mathematical terms lists important math words used in the lessons and from earlier math courses.

Index

An Index is included at the back of the Student Text and Teacher’s Implementation Guide.
