Supporting Mathematics Learning Through Formative Assessment
April 6, 2011The focus of this session is how teachers can support student learning in mathematics through formative assessment, a research-based practice that can have powerful effects on student achievement. The session will address what formative assessment is, what it looks like in the classroom, and why it works. Examples of how teachers have implemented formative assessment in middle school mathematics will also be shared.

Margaret's current work focuses the development of academic language for EL students and on data use for school improvement, including the use of longitudinal data systems, formative assessment, and teachers’ use of formative assessment evidence. Prior to joining CRESST, she had many years of teaching and leadership experience in and at schools in the United Kingdom and the United States, including a period as a County Inspector of Education in the United Kingdom.
