About the Author

Dr. Brian Robert Shmaefsky earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biology and doctorates in Environmental Physiology and Science Education from the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University. He also worked within various areas of healthcare, including X-ray technology, forensic science and biochemical production.

Dr. Shmaefsky has taught high school and college-level science courses since 1986, and is a fervent proponent of using case studies, creative thinking and problem-based learning in the classroom. For his innovations in science teaching, Dr. Shmaefsky has received awards from organizations such as the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is currently working on grant-funded projects aimed at improving science education.
