A veteran biology educator, Ellyn Daugherty began teaching biotechnology in 1988. She was the founder and lead teacher of the San Mateo Biotechnology Career Pathway (SMBCP), an educational program that prepares students for careers in biotechnology through articulated courses, lab skill development and workplace training. Using Ellyn’s model curriculum, Biotechnology: Science for the New Millennium, over 10,000 students have participated in the SMBCP and over 1,000 have completed laboratory internships at over twenty biotechnology industry and academic partner sites.
Ellyn has received numerous awards for her innovative teaching and the development of her revolutionary curriculum, including the LaBowskey Master Teacher Award (Stanford University, 1995) and the National Biotechnology Teacher Award (Biotechnology Institute, 2004). She believes strongly in professional development and conducts in-person and virtual workshops to help educators start or improve their biotechnology education programs. Ellyn’s teacher support website provides curriculum plans and strategies for teachers and school districts to plan and improve their biotechnology programs.

"Our program just completed its first cycle of testing for B.A.C.E. certification. Our results were among the best in the state, and I attribute that success in large part to the EMC Biotechnology Curriculum. The text and lab manual are thorough and easy to comprehend. Job well done!"
Greg Gill, Educator, Pace High School Biotechnology Academy, FLBiotechnology: Science for the New Millennium curriculum focuses students in the skills that are used to do science, to apply biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics concepts to real-world research and manufacturing. This prepares students for academic and career pathways into academic, industrial, and governmental science facilities.
"Biotechnology: Science for The New Millennium (BS4NM) is the most current, flexible, innovative and well-supported biotechnology/bioscience curriculum for high schools and colleges. BS4NM is an age-independent curriculum where high-level science content supports laboratory process and skill development. The text and the lab manual are written in short, easy to digest sections with excellent graphics and figures as well as extensive vocabulary support. The curriculum reinforces the importance of workplace readiness for doing science."
