Understanding the Modified Pacing

The Texas Math Solution offers three pacing options. This article is designed to help you understand the changes that you will see in the Scope & Sequence and Topic Pacing Guides if you are utilizing one of the modified pacing options (165 or 150-Day).

Scope & Sequences

Changes to the number of Instructional days:

  • We bolded the number of days in the Scope and Sequence if the number of days changed from 180-Day pacing. In the example below, Lesson 4 (Yours IS to Reason Why!) is 2 instructional days and is bolded. This lets you know that the overall number of Instructional Days differs from the 180-Day Scope & Sequence.
  • The Readiness TEKS have been bolded. In the image below standard 6.3E has been bolded in Lesson 4. This lets you know that the 6.3 is a Readiness Standard.

The modified Scope and Sequence will show you when content is omitted.

Content could be omitted if:

  • It was a prerequisite (below grade level)
  • It was an extension (beyond grade level)
  • It is reinforcing material that has already been covered in the Topic.

Topic Pacing Guides

Below is the 150-Day Topic Pacing Guide for a Grade 6 Topic.

Notice that Lesson 1 has been omitted and that Lesson 4 has a bolded pacing day. This means that the number of pacing days has changed.

The second page shows the full Topic Pacing Calendar. Notice that Lesson 1 is not on the calendar, as it is omitted in this pacing option.

All of the lesson components are listed. The essential activities are only starred on the NEW 180, 165, and 150-Day Topic Pacing Guides in the Topic Plan (calendar) section.

Starred Activities have at least 1 of the following:

  • Key term
  • Worked Example
  • Essential content to meet the TEKS
  • Building block information needed for a future lesson or activity

Activities might not be starred if:

  • It was a prerequisite (below grade level)
  • It was an extension (beyond grade level)
  • It is reinforcing material that has already been covered in the Topic.

Final Thoughts

Take the starred and non-starred essential activities into account when planning for lessons that have reduced pacing. Plan for what could or should be omitted based on student need.

Prioritize the activities that have the purple stars but make sure to do the math for ALL activities, including those that are not starred, to make instructional decisions based on student need.

Remember, the lesson did not change. To adjust the pacing, you will have to make more instructional decisions about what the must do’s are versus the nice-to-do’s.
