3 Fall-Themed Math Activities to Try This Month

Give your students opportunities to think about math in fun, relevant ways.

[Originally published 10/23/17. Updated with activities from the updated MATHbook]

It's that time of year when the jackets come out of the closet and the iced coffee orders give way to Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Fall is here!

To help you celebrate, we're sharing three fall-themed activities you can use with your students to get them thinking about mathematics in a festive way.

  • 7th Grade Activity: The Pumpkin-iest! Students use their fraction skills to help Paige make the perfect pumpkin smoothie.

  • 7th Grade Activity: Pumpkin Patch - Students help determine the number of pumpkins that can be picked in Paula's Pumpkin Patch (say that 5 times fast!).

  • Algebra 1 Activity: Using a Quadratic Equation to Model Vertical Motion Ever heard of punkin' chunkin'? Your students probably have, and they can model the motion of a pumpkin released from a catapult using a vertical motion model.

How do you celebrate fall in your classroom? Got any tips to share? Let us know on social media using the hashtag #longlivemath.
