What Previous Globaloria Users Can Expect in Proto This Fall

Check out some of the exciting new updates.

Proto on computer screenIf you've previously used Globaloria, we've got some great updates for you! Proto is everything you love about Globaloria combined with Carnegie Learning's research-proven technology to bring you and your students an even better learning experience.

New Functionality

  • Proto has a brand new easy-to-use interface. (Learn more here.)
  • We will be replacing our Flash-based courses for the 2019-20 school year in an effort to keep our curriculum rigorous and relevant.
  • We heard your feedback about the amount of writing students previously had to do, so we removed blog entries and learning logs. Students will now reflect about their learning in a notebook entry at the end of each topic.
  • Notifications (e.g. your feedback on student work) are the first thing seen by students when they login to Proto.
  • Students can chat directly with Coding Coaches who can help them with any issues.
  • GIDE, our integrated development environment, has been renamed to DevSpace.
  • There are a few Globaloria features we love that aren’t present in this initial release of Proto (e.g. the game gallery and other social features), but we plan to bring them back soon.

Note: You can still log into the Globaloria SLP until October 2018 to view your previous classes and download student projects. Make sure you download them before the end of October.

Better Content

  • We're continually adding more rigor to the courses, and we’ve enhanced the curriculum to include a more in-depth research topic where students learn advanced search techniques, how to find credible sources online, and how to properly attribute images.
  • We've made some language updates to promote computational thinking and to include more computer science terminology. This extends Proto's appeal to even more students, including those interested in computational careers outside of game development.
  • One of the key principles of project-based learning is student ownership, so we now allow students taking the Introduction to Computer Science: Web Development course to build a website on any topic they want. This engages students to own their learning and work on something they're truly passionate about.
  • We encourage you to complete the course on your own to get familiar with these changes in the curriculum.
  • We created a "Welcome to Proto" lesson plan you can use to help students get familiar with the software.

This initial release includes the following courses: Essentials of Coding (101) – English, Essentials of Game Design (102), Intro to Computer Science: Web Design (201a), Intro to Computer Science: Game Design (201b), Game Design & Coding: Hidden Object Game (202a), Game Design & Coding: Action Game (202b), Mobile App Design & Coding: Side-Scrolling Game (203) and Teamwork CS: Game Development in Teams (301).

The following courses will be available by the end of September: Game Inventor (100), Essentials of Coding (101) – Spanish and ELL, and 3D Game Design and Coding: Adventure Game (302).

Don’t worry, the Globeys will be back in October! If you have students who want to submit an existing project, make sure they download and save their projects from the Globaloria SLP by October 2018.
