Built from research.
Founded by cognitive and computer scientists from Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Learning has been deeply immersed in research from the get-go. Our work is guided by more than 20 years of scientific research into how students learn math and how to make math learning better for both you and your students. Our math solution successfully meets ESSA Tier 1 "Strong" evidence standards.
"Our approach is different because it is inspired by empirical data. We are helping to transform the classroom by applying cognitive science to our products and services. My job is to set students up for success by providing them with the best math education on the planet."
Dr. Bob Hausmann, Author and Learning Technology Scientist
Proven by research.
In an independent “Gold Standard” study funded by the U.S. Department of Education and conducted by the RAND Corporation, the Carnegie Learning blended approach nearly doubled growth in performance on standardized tests relative to typical students in the second year of implementation. This study is more comprehensive and rigorous than any other research study on a middle school or high school mathematics program.

Our research team is made of master math practitioners, cognitive scientists, data scientists, and learning science researchers. They conduct advanced research, collaborate with a variety of independent research organizations and universities, and publish results on the most effective mathematical practices and behaviors that lead to sustained math achievement, always mindful of what works best in today's math classrooms.
"We take the research very seriously, so we understand what’s been proven to work and balance that with a healthy respect for the difficulty in translating laboratory research into practical and effective classroom practices. We're also unique in that we don’t just read about learning science — we’re active collaborators with some of the world’s leading learning scientists."

Innovative Assessment with MATHia Software
Funded by NewSchools Venture Fund, the goal of this project is to develop a simple metric that summarizes complex, fine-grained formative assessment of student skill mastery provided by our MATHia Software. This metric will be the basis for grade-level status monitoring, grading, and external assessment prediction in MATHia.
Hyper-Personalized Intelligent Tutoring (HPIT)
Funded by the US Departments of Defense Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative and in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, HPIT focused on how we can improve tutoring interactions by taking into account non-cognitive factors (such as personality variables, preferences, and attributes like persistence and attitudes towards learning).
Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), our researchers partnered with others at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh to use field experimentation and data mining to improve the effectiveness of educational technology.
Integrating Human and Automated Tutoring
In partnership with the University of Memphis, our research team is exploring the interactions between students and human tutors and students and intelligent tutoring systems. Funded by the U.S. Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, the research examines why and when students access human help, and how that effects student work.
